Pre-operative Exam

Pre-operative Exam

A preoperative physical examination is usually performed upon the request of a surgeon. Purpose of the exam is to make sure the patient is healthy enough to safely undergo anesthesia and surgery.

All preoperative physical examinations begin by gathering basic health information, such as medical history, any pre-existing conditions, and current medications. Patients may be asked a variety of medical questions to better understand their current health condition so the right decisions can be made for surgery.

Testing may include:

  • Basic blood work
  • X-ray
  • EKG
  • Pregnancy test
  • Lung function

Certain high risk patients may need special tests or specialist evaluation prior to surgery.
